More than half of Turkey's provinces will be linked by railways by 2023, the Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications of Turkey told Trend on Thursday.

Work is underway to build 15,380 kilometers of railways throughout the country.

The ministry also said more than 90 percent of the existing railways in Turkey have been reconstructed.

"Over the past 15 years, 18.5 billion euros have been invested in the railway sector," said the ministry.

Turkey intends to increase investments in the railway sector to 39 billion euros by 2023. Of these, 31 billion euros will be invested in the construction of high speed railways.

The first railway in Turkey was built in 1860 in Izmir province in the west of the country. Its length was 357 kilometers.
