By Ilkin Shafiyev - Trend:

It is necessary to strengthen control over imports of textile products in Azerbaijan, Mehriban Akhundova, chairperson of Azerbaijan’s Textile Producers and Exporters Association, told Trend.

She said that in particular, this concerns clothes, adding that in this regard, the Association is preparing an appeal to the relevant state structures.

“There is no appropriate control in Azerbaijan to prevent the imports of low-quality products into the country,” she noted. “Sometimes harmful chemicals and dyestuffs are used in the clothes produced by China or Pakistan. It is not just a synthetic fiber, but scraps of synthetic materials. For example, this concerns socks, pantyhose and children’s T-shirts.”

Earlier, Akhundova told Trend that it is necessary to reduce customs duties on the import of a number of accessories in Azerbaijan for the development of the textile industry in the country. She said that domestic companies avoid using synthetic materials in the production of clothing, but at the same time, they need reduction of customs duties so that the cost of finished products decreases.

In January-April 2018, Azerbaijan imported clothes and accessories to it worth $30.96 million, with the exception of knitwear, and this is 2.23 percent less than in the same period last year, according to Azerbaijan’s State Customs Committee.
