Abdufattokh Musurmonkulov, an Uzbek scientist from Markhamat district of Andijan region, created a high-yielding cultivar of mulberry tree on the basis of inoculation of the local variety “Uzbekistan” and the Japanese “Oshima”, the press service of the president of Uzbekistan stated.

The Markhamat-2017 cultivar, as the scientist decided to call it, differs in large and densely arranged leaves. It can yield up to 40 tons of leaves from one hectare of plantation, whereas ordinary trees usually yield 20 tons of leaves.

“Cocoons can be harvested three times a year. Ready-made silk fabrics will make a big profit. We don’t have enough leaves of mulberry. The existing trees are old, their yield has decreased. To develop the silk industry, it is necessary to create such highly productive varieties,” Shavkat Mirziyoyev said while being acquainted with the new cultivar.

The Uzbek leader emphasized that silkworming is the national value and wealth of Uzbekistan.
