A Turkmen delegation led by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov paid a working visit to the Astrakhan region of Russia, the Turkmen Foreign Ministry said in a message May 21.

A meeting with Governor of the Astrakhan region Alexander Zhilkin was held, during which the parties discussed issues of cooperation in the fields of economy and trade, transport, shipbuilding, education and science.

It was stressed that in recent years, the relations between the two countries have been actively developing not only in the federal but also in the regional format, and the Astrakhan region holds a special place in this, the message said.

Earlier, Turkmenistan and Astrakhan region discussed the prospects for expanding the partnership between the business circles of the two countries, taking into account the full range of logistics services and other opportunities of the new seaport in Turkmenbashi.

New prospects are opened by Turkmenistan's projects to create transnational transport and transit corridors in the direction of Iran, Afghanistan and India.

During the bilateral meetings, the idea of opening a wholesale and logistics center in the Astrakhan region to introduce Turkmen goods into the Russian market was also expressed.

In February 2018, it was reported that the port of Turkmenbashi is already loading polypropylene into the holds of the Russian dry cargo ship "Musa Jalil" for delivery to the port of Olya in the Astrakhan region.
