China would finance the construction of a dam in the Iranian southern province of Bushehr, an Iranian lawmaker said.

Seyyed Kamaleddin Shahriari, a member of the Parliamentary Committee for Civil Affairs, said China has an 85 percent stake, while Iran’s Energy Ministry holds the remaining 15 percent, IRNA news agency reported.

He added that the dam will be completed within four years and could play a key role in preventing floodwater.

With a planned height of 56 meters, the Dasht-e Palang dam will withhold about 150 million cubic meters of water, Shahriari said.

Iran is a leading country in dam construction and many countries, including Sri Lanka, Syria, and Tajikistan as well as several African states, have entered either dam construction or consultation projects with Tehran.
