By Ilkin Shafiyev - Trend:

There is a plan to start construction of a big pomegranate production complex in Azerbaijan in 2019, Farhad Garashov, chairman of the Azerbaijan Pomegranate Producers and Exporters Association, told Trend May 25.

“Several members of our association have already prepared a business plan,” he said. “Foreign consulting and audit companies were attracted for the plan’s drafting. The business plan has been submitted to Azerbaijan’s Economy Ministry and we expect a positive response. The project may be financed through the National Fund for Entrepreneurship Support (NFES).”

He added that the complex may be built in one of Azerbaijan’s industrial parks.

“The complex is planned to consist of four facilities producing pomegranate juice, concentrate, processing of pomegranate peel and seeds,” he said. “The total cost of the complex is 25 million manats, according to the business plan. The construction is scheduled to start in 2019 and to be completed by 2021.”

In general, an important task is to increase the types of products obtained from pomegranate, he noted.

“This will help increase the export potential,” Garashov said. “It is possible to get juices, alcoholic beverages, narsharab (sauce) from pomegranate. Pomegranate peel and oil from its seeds are used in cosmetology and pharmaceutical production. Thus, it is a non-waste product.”

The Azerbaijan Pomegranate Producers and Exporters Association was established Oct. 31, 2016.
