France to issue Uzbekistan loan on projects in water supply, energy sector

The French Development Agency (AFD) is planning to provide a total of 600 million euros in loans to Uzbekistan for projects in tourism, water supply, construction and modernization of hydroelectric power plants, agriculture, heating systems in the Tashkent region in 2018-2021, the press service of the agency said.

The first annual bilateral consultations between the AFD and the government of Uzbekistan were held this week in Tashkent. During the consultations, the sides discussed a portfolio of joint projects for 2018-2021.

"The AFD is ready to allocate 150 million euros a year, in addition to the grants of the EU Investment Facility for Central Asia (IFCA),” the press service said.

The governments of Uzbekistan and France signed an agreement on activities of the AFD in the Central Asian republic in December 2016. At the same time, the AFD granted Uzbekistan the first loan of $23.5 million for the modernization of the waste management system in Samarkand. The project will also be financed by an IFCA loan of 8 million euros.

The AFD is an agency of the French government, created in 1941. The agency finances projects and programs in more than 100 developing countries. In 2017, the agency allocated more than 10.4 billion euros to support the development of its activities in all countries.
