The Iranian deputy minister of industries, mining and trade stressed the need for enhanced cooperation between Iranian and Austrian small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

There are 85,000 industrial units in Iran, 92 percent of which are small- and medium-sized enterprises, Sadeq Najafi said on May 28 as cited by Shata.

The SMEs have created jobs for more than 1,300 million people across the country, he added.

He made the remarks during a meeting with Austria’s ambassador to Tehran.

"Small businesses account for nearly 97 percent in Austria and Iran is keen to use the experience of Austrian industrialists," Najafi said.

The Austrian envoy, for his part, referred to Tehran-Vienna’s age-old diplomatic ties and said, "Currently, 500 Austrian firms directly cooperate with Iranian firms".

He also urged the need for more interaction between Iranian and Austrian SMEs.

Iran traded $364.34 million worth of non-oil goods with Austria in the last Iranian year (ended March 20, 2018), registering an increase of 19.2 percent compared to the year before.

This made the European country Iran’s 30th biggest trading partner.

Iran Customs Administration’s data shows that Iran exported 6,617 tons of commodities worth $28.28 million to Austria last year, posting a 166.46 percent and 155.66 percent growth in tonnage and value respectively year-on-year.
