More than half of cargo transportation in Azerbaijan falls on road transport

The transport sector of Azerbaijan transported 110.2 million tons of cargo in January-June 2018, which is one percent more than in the same period of 2017, the State Statistics Committee said in a statement.

Of the total volume of goods transported in January-May, 81.4 percent fell on the private sector. 63.9 percent of all goods were transported by road, 26 percent - by pipeline, 6.1 percent - by rail, 3.9 percent - by sea and 0.1 percent - by air.

Some 952.6 million people were carried by passenger transport for the first six months of the current year, which is 1.5 percent more than in 2017. The majority (87.3 percent) of the passengers were transported by road, 12.4 percent - by metro, and the remainder - by other modes of transport.

Some 6.7 million tons of cargo were carried by railway transport, which is 7.2 percent less than in January-June 2017.

On average, the number of loaded railway cars amounted to 334, unloaded - 396 per day. The average daily load of railcars in the northern direction of the railway amounted to 12,400 tons, in the western direction – 4,900 tons, in the southern direction – 800 tons.

Some 4.29 million tons of cargo were transported by sea during the reporting period, which is 9 percent more than in January-June 2017. Some 53.9 percent of the transported cargo fell on oil cargo. The volume of cargo handled in the ports of Azerbaijan in January-June amounted to 4.92 million tons.

Some 70.5 million tons of cargo were transported by road transport during the reporting period, which exceeds the same figure in 2017 by 2.7 percent.

The volume of passenger transportations by road transport for this period amounted to 831.9 million people (an increase of 1.4 percent compared to January-June 2017). Some 96 percent of the passengers were transported by buses, four percent-by motor vehicles.

The volume of passenger traffic by metro amounted to 118.4 million people, an increase of 2.3 percent compared to the same period in 2017.

Some 1.06 million passengers were transported by air in the first five months of the current year, which is 7.8 percent more than in January-June 2017. 0.2 per cent of transportations by this mode of transport fell on the private sector. Cargo transportation by air transport increased by 33.6 percent and amounted to 102,900 tons during one year.
