Azerbaijan has seen a positive trend in the production and export of fruit and vegetable products, the Chairman of the Fruit and Vegetable Producers and Exporters Association Bashir Guliyev told Trend July 23.

"For example, we exported 23 percent more tomatoes in the first five months of this year. The harvest season for other crops still continues, and it is too early to sum up the results. But we can say with confidence as early as now that, there is a trend of growth in traditional fruit and vegetable crops. New varieties, new technologies are introduced, business becomes more stable, modernized, there is a constant growth," Guliyev said.

He also stressed that, there is a trend towards the implantation of olive and almond groves in the territory of Absheron, which will lead to an increase in export potential.

"Some areas in the territory of Absheron were in poor condition, the land was allocated for quarries, which led to deformation of the soil. The land is being restored now, infrastructure is being created, irrigation channels are being built, and olive and almond groves appear here. Entrepreneurs are interested in investing in this area. New technologies are being introduced, so-called high-density gardens are being planted and cultivated. This is a positive fact, both from an environmental point of view and from the point of view of business development", said the chairman of the association.

The export of fruit and vegetable products in January-June 2018 amounted to $276.7 million, which is more than 20 percent higher than the same figure in 2017, according to the data provided by the State Customs Committee of Azerbaijan.
