South Korean automaker Hyundai plans to build a plant in Namangan region of Uzbekistan with a production capacity of up to 3,000 trucks and buses per year, the Uzbek media reported.

The plant will assemble trucks with a carrying capacity from 1 ton to 50 tons, intercity, international and tourist buses, as well as special vehicles

“At the first stage the plant will produce 8-20 cars a day, what makes for 1,000 cars per year. The figure will later increase to 3,000 cars per year, including 2,000 trucks and 1,000 buses. In the beginning, spare parts will be imported from Korea, then, in accordance with the localization program for three years, locally-manufactured parts will be used,” a source in the South Korean company said.

About 1,000 jobs will be created with the launch of the new enterprise, with the number growing to 6,000 in the future.

The Korean side said that it is planned to establish cooperation with the educational institutions of the republic after commissioning of the plant in order to provide the sphere with professional and qualified personnel, workers and technologists.

The agreement on the mass production of Hyundai cars in Uzbekistan was achieved during the visit of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev to Seoul in November 2017.

The topic of localization of automobile production in Uzbekistan has become especially relevant against the backdrop of extensive criticism from the public and President Shavkat Mirziyoyev personally.
