Around 22,000 tons of shrimps worth $150 million were exported to many countries in Europe and Asia during the previous Iranian calendar year (which ended on March 20, 2017), Hossein Ali Abdolhay, deputy for Aquaculture Development with Iran Fisheries Organization, said.

“About 80 percent of Iran’s total shrimp production was exported to the Persian Gulf littoral states, Vietnam, Germany, France and Spain last year,” Abdolhay said, IRNA news agency reported.

The value of the exported shrimp stood at $150 million, he further said, adding that the country produced 32,000 tons of shrimp last year.

Shrimp culture in Iran is mainly undertaken in the provinces of Khuzestan, Hormozgan, Sistan-Baluchestan, Bushehr and Golestan.

Currently, 4,300 and 3,670 hectares of land are under shrimp farming in the province of Bushehr and Golestan, respectively, according to the official.
