Iran sees 10% increase in purchase of green tea leaves

The volume of green tea leaves purchased from tea producers in Gilan and Mazandaran provinces of Iran stood at 103,000 tons since early 2018, said head of Iran Tea Organization Habib Jahansaz.

“Around 103,000 tons of green tea leaves worth 203 billion toman has been purchased from Gilan and Mazandaran tea producers since January 2018, which is 10,000 tons more than in the same period in 2017,” ISNA quoted Jahansaz as saying.

He went on to add that the the third phase of harvest of green tea leaves in the country’s northern regions will continue until late October.

Reportedly, green tea leaves from the area of 25,000 hectares in Iran’s northern regions are harvested in three stages: in summer, spring and autumn. As many as 60,000 people are involved in harvesting green tea leaves in Gilan and Mazandaran.

About 95 percent of tea orchards in Iran are rain-fed.

About 110,000 tons of dried tea are consumed in Iran every year.

Iran imports tea from India, the UAE, Sri Lanka and Kenya.
