Tehran, Iran, Sept. 26

Trend:

Iran exported 303,000 tons of tomato in the first five months of the current Iranian calendar year (started on March 21) an issue that prompted the country’s Ministry of Industry, Mining and Trade to ban the fruit’s exports as its price has sharply increased.

Mahmoud Bazari, the director of the exports bureau of the Trade Promotion Organization (TPO), said some 303,000 tons of tomatoes worth $111 million were exported over five months to August 22, IRIB news agency reported on September 26.

He added that the export of the fruit witnessed a 123 and 217 percent growth in the terms of tonnage and value, respectively.

Recently, all provincial agriculture departments and customs offices across the country were notified in a directive that the export of tomato has been banned until further notice, Director General of the Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration's Export Affairs Division Ali Akbar Shamani said on Monday.

Iraq, Russia, the UAE, Afghanistan and Qatar were the main customers of Iranian tomatoes during the period under review.
