Baku, Azerbaijan, Sept. 26

By Anvar Mammadov - Trend:

Implementation of the second project on the development of beekeeping in Azerbaijan, drafted by the country’s Agriculture Ministry with the support of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), may be postponed, Melek Cakmak, head of the FAO Partnership and Liaison Office in Azerbaijan, told Trend Sept. 26.

“The implementation of this project is somewhat delayed,” said Cakmak. “That’s because the new leadership of Azerbaijan’s Agriculture Ministry identified its priority areas. So the project’s implementation had to be slightly postponed in order to focus on priority projects.”

She added that the project isn’t canceled and its implementation will begin within a few months.

Earlier it was expected that the project, the main goal of which is to resolve issues related to packaging and international certification of Azerbaijani honey, will be implemented in 2018. The approximate cost of the project is estimated at $800,000.

“This project is the continuation of the first one,” said Cakmak. “We have already supported the improvement of the gene pool of honey bees. The new project will be aimed at increasing the export potential of Azerbaijani honey, which, according to many experts, is the best in the world.”

Azerbaijan has been a member of the FAO since 1995. The organization’s office has been operating in Azerbaijan since 2007.
