The Baku International Sea Trade Port has launched two new tugs, Alat and SilkWay, Vafa Safarli-Abdullazade, spokesperson for the Baku port, told Trend on Sept. 28.

The tugs have been produced by Turkish company Loyd Shipyard.

"The vessels will be used as tugs during rescue operations, fire fighting, etc.," Safarli-Abdullazade added. “The vessels have been equipped with the most advanced radar installations and meet modern requirements."

“The total capacity of the ‘Alat’ vessel is 56 tons, while ‘SilkWay’ vessel - 82 tons,” she said. “The maximum speed of vessels reaches 10 knots. After launching the tugs, their total number reached seven. In general, there are 12 vessels in the Baku International Sea Trade Port."

“If in the future there will be a need for additional purchase of tugboats, this issue can be considered,” Safarli-Abdullazade said.

The cargo transshipment potential of the port, which opened on May 14, 2018, is 15 million tons in the first phase, including 100,000 containers per year.

Seven berths of 12 existing ones serve dry cargo vessels, two berths serve ferries, and other two berths serve vessels of Ro-Ro and Ro-Pax type. Another berth is used for the maintenance of the fleet of the port.
