Iraq’s $1 billion debt for electricity purchase will soon be paid to Iran in several stages, said Mahmoud Reza Haqqi-Fam, the spokesman of Iran Power Transmission, Generation and Distribution Company (Tavanir), ISNA (Iranian Students News Agency) reported.

He said Iraq had a number of problems to pay this debt.

“We are expanding Iran’s power plant by selling electricity to neighboring countries like Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan, and the price for electricity sold to neighboring countries will be accepted in cash or barter,” he said.

He added that the application of US sanctions won’t affect electricity exports. However, there will be restrictions on reception of funds for electricity, he said.

It is possible to find a way out of the restrictions through bilateral exchanges, he noted.
