Investment contracts worth 4.670 trillion rials (about $111.190 million) to support activity of Iran’s Chabahar Port have been signed at the port since the beginning of the current Iranian year (started March 21, 2018), Ports and Maritime Director General of Iran’s Sistan and Baluchistan Province Behrooz Aghaei said in an interview with IRNA.

He said that the Chabahar Port has an important role in regional and international economic and trade exchange. It is an important and cost-effective port for such countries as Afghanistan to enter the international waters, he noted.

“The allocation of more than $1 billion for the improvement of the first stage of the Shahid Beheshti Port of Iran, provision of equipment for loading and unloading of containers and the creation of infrastructure shows particular attention for this port,” he said.

He added that 110,000 tons of wheat and grain products were transited to Afghanistan through the Chabahar Port, and this shows that this port is important for Afghanistan.

“In accordance with transit statistics from the Chabahar Port, in less than five months, six times more products were transited than for the last five years,” he said. “The port’s exception from the US sanctions further strengthened its international role.”
