Major freight carrier in Azerbaijan plans to operate railcars on BTK in 2019

ASE Express, a major cargo carrier in Azerbaijan, is considering the possibility of operating four to five railway cars on the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars (BTK) rail route in 2019, the head of the freight transportation department of the company, Hunar Ashrafzade told Trend.

Ashrafzade noted that presently, the company prefers international road transport (TIR).

"Nevertheless, we have high expectations from the BTK railway, and we plan to use this route actively next year," Ashrafzade said.

The official opening ceremony of the BTK railway was held in Baku Oct. 30 last year. The BTK railway was constructed on the basis a Georgian-Azerbaijani-Turkish intergovernmental agreement.

The railway’s peak capacity will be 17 million tons of cargo per year. At an initial stage, this figure will be one million passengers and 6.5 million tons of cargo.
