Trend:

Iran is negotiating to eliminate imports tariffs on its steel exports with its neighboring countries, while its steel industry has been hit by the US re-imposed sanctions.

A member of Iranian Steel Producers Association, Reza Shahrestani, has announced that Iran is in talks with neighbors to eliminate tariffs on imports of Iranian products that would facilitate exports, Trend reports via ISNA.

The official indicated the implementation of tariff on Iran steel imports in Iraq and Afghanistan that was applied due to US sanctions. The approach has led to negative competition among Iranian producers.

"Due to sanctions, Iran is not able to export its products to all countries, the neighbors misuse the conditions and implement high tariffs on Iranian products," he said.

The United States re-imposed economic sanctions against Iran, with the steel trade being one of the industry sectors to be directly affected. Iran is the 13th largest steel producer in the world.

"On the other hand, negative competition among exporters has forced them to cut the prices down," he added.

The official noted the negotiations with neighboring countries to remove the tariffs on imports, would support the domestic products.

"The volume of domestic steel products by the end of current year (March 20) would be 25 million tons, the domestic consumption is 15 million tons while the exports volume would be 10 million tons," he added.

"The exporters' obligation to submit foreign currency revenues to Integrated System for Hard Currency Transactions (NIMA) should change, so the foreign currency would support the domestic industries," Shahrestani added.
