Iran increases exports via railways by 140%

The Managing Director of Islamic Republic of Iran Railways (known as RAI) announced that the export via railway has increased by 140 percent and Iranian transit of goods via railways has increased by 40 percent.

"The share of railway in the transit section of the goods has risen to 14 percent,” Managing Director of RAI Saeed Mohammadzadeh said on the sidelines of the ceremony of launching seven construction projects in Neishabour (a city in Mashhad province), Trend reports citing IRNA.

"Of the 1,300 wagons in the railway fleet, 750 wagons require to undergo repair and reconstruction. This requires about $190 million,” he said.

Mohammadzadeh went on to say that the amount of cargo carried by the country's rail network this year has increased by 18 percent, compared to same period last year, reaching 35 billion tons by the end of this Iranian year (started on March 19, 2018).

He went on to say that the passenger traffic via railways has increased by 13 percent.

“Last year, 13.6 billion passengers traveled through the country's rail system, and this year, passenger traffic increased by 17 percent on the Tehran-Mashhad route and by 13 percent in the entire country,” said the official.
