Iran could boost the domestic production by providing customs duty exemption for domestic producers that are in need of raw material imports, while the country fights the smuggling goods through its official border checkpoints, said the head of Iran Customs Administration Mehdi Mirashrafi.

He said Iranian customs is not responsible for customs duty exemptions, but it can put forward its proposals to the relevant authorities in this regard, Trend reports citing ILNA.

"We propose to provide customs duty exemptions for domestic producers that are in need of raw material imports for production," he added.

The long procedure of releasing imported goods from the customs has created problems for the county's domestic producers, said Mirashrafi.

He noted Iranian customs is fighting with smuggling of goods through its official customs checkpoint and has seized some smuggled goods in this process.

"The customs should supervise the imports and exports of goods from the economic free zones as well. Effective measures have been implemented in this regard," he added.

Tehran's Chamber of Commerce has recently announced that the goods worth $20 billion get smuggled into Iran every year. Home appliances, computer equipment and cosmetics are on the top of the list. Meanwhile, Iran's fuel smuggling to other countries has soared.
