By Elnur Baghishov - Trend:

A ban on the chickpea exports will cause Iran’s losing global markets, said Nasser Moradi, head of the National Chickpea Council of Iran, Trend reports via ISNA.

He said the export of chickpeas was banned in the tenth month of this Iranian year (started March 21, 2018).

No steps have been taken by the Iranian Ministry of Agriculture Jihad so far for the resumption of exports of this product, he noted.

“Export of chickpeas allows increasing employment,” he said.

He added that before the ban was introduced, the price of 1 kg of good-quality peas was about 80,000 rials (about $1.9 per kg). The price has decreased to 60,000 rials (about $1.4), he said.

He added that Iran’s chickpeas export was about 140,000 tons 16 years ago, noting that however, there is a big difference between this figure and recent exports.

He said the chickpea export in Iran has been lower than its import in recent years, adding that that only 9,700 tons of chickpeas were exported compared to 120,000 tons of chickpea imports.
