By Elnur Baghishov – Trend:

Due to 70-80 percent of the saffron produced in Iran being exported, the rise in prices is not beneficial for Iran, as Iran is not the only saffron producer in the world, Ali Hosseini, member of the National Saffron Council of Iran, told the Young Journalists Club (YJC), Trend reports.

Hosseini said that saffron is a strategic product and that this may lead to a rise in the prices of other products.

Hosseini added that the average price of each mithqal (a unit of mass equal to 4.6 grams) of saffron is about 400,000-450,000 rials (app. $9.52-10.7). However, the current price of 1 mithqal of this product exceeds 500,000 rials ($11.9).

"Currently, the minimum price of 1 kg of saffron is 60 million rials (app. $1,400), and its maximum price is 120-130 million rials (app. $2,800-3,000)," he said.

Hosseini said the private sector is not against the sale of saffron on the commodity exchange, and demanded that the stock market prepare a suitable strategy and the sale of raw saffron in large amounts be prevented.
