President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev identified urgent tasks to increase the production of building materials at least twice over the next five years, Trend reports with reference to Uzbek media.

On May 14, the head of state held a meeting on the priorities for the further development of the building materials industry in the country. It was emphasized that it is necessary to expand the development of non-metallic deposits, start industrial processing of materials and diversify the industry as a whole.

Over the past two years, the volume of construction work in Uzbekistan has increased 1.7 times.

The construction industry in the country mainly uses building materials of domestic production. At the same time, ceramic and chipboard panels, glass, wallpaper and other materials are imported, although the country has ample opportunities to increase the production of modern building materials to substitute the import.

"Nowadays, in the conditions of an ever-increasing amount of the construction work, the building materials industry should become a leading industry, one of the driving forces for economic growth. By introducing energy-efficient technologies at enterprises, we can save our natural resources and reduce the cost of materials," Mirziyoyev said.

The President paid special attention to the issues of the stable supply of enterprises in the sphere of energy at an affordable price. Using the example of a brick factory working on coal, he noted that it is possible to reduce the cost of production to 50 percent.

It was said that the use of modern technologies will save natural gas and reduce the cost of products. It will be beneficial to the entrepreneur, to the people, and the state.

In this regard, instructions were given on the introduction of energy-saving technologies and reduction of the production costs in the building materials industry.

This yea, four cement plants with a production capacity of 2 million tons each were put into operation in Karakalpakstan, Surkhandarya, Andijan and Navoi regions.

By the end of the year, new plants with a capacity of 3.5 million tons will be commissioned; the total potential of cement production will be increased to 15 million tons. As expected, this will allow covering domestic demand and reducing the cost of cement.
