Uzbekistan picks spot for building its first nuclear plant

The first nuclear power plant in Uzbekistan will be constructed near the Lake Tuzkan of Aydar-Arnasay system of lakes in the Jizzakh region, Trend reports with reference to the press service of Uzatom.

The decision was made by the Republican Working Group for the Coordination of the Project Implementation and the Scientific and Technical Expert Council of the Agency for the Development of Atomic Energy under the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

“Among the potential locations, 4 platforms located in the Navoi and Bukhara regions, the Tudakul reservoir area and 3 platforms in the Jizzakh region, near Lake Tuzkan. As a result of the engineering and technical work of researchers, the platform near the Tuzkan Aydar-Arnasay Lake System of the Jizzakh region was identified as the priority platform,” the message says.

According to Uzatom, the second stage of engineering and exploration work for further licensing and approval of the selected platform is currently ongoing.

The contract for the construction of NPP is planned to be concluded before the end of the year. In this case, the construction itself will begin in 2022. The project will be financed with own funds of Uzbekistan and the state loan from Russia.

The NPP will consist of generation units with a capacity of 1200 MW each, which meet all the safety requirements of the International Atomic Energy Agency. After its introduction, Uzbekistan will be able to reduce carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere to 14 million tons and nitrogen oxides by 36,000 tons.

As a result of the launch of the station, Uzbekistan will annually save 3.7 billion cubic meters of natural gas.
