By Nargiz Sadikhova - Trend:

Starting from 2021 the Uzbek Basma tobacco will substitute some of its Mediterranean equivalents on the market of countries of European Union, Trend reports via Uzbek media.

Furthermore, it is estimated that from 2023 the volume of tobacco export will reach 650-700 tons of raw material a year.

“The full substitution of Balkan and East Mediterranean Basma by Uzbek tobacco is not envisaged, due to the fact that not all of their subtypes are the same,” the report said.

This type of tobacco is being cultivated in Urgut district of Uzbekistan and it is originally from West Greece.

So far the tobacco export only covered countries of CIS and European plants purchased Basma in countries of Balkan and of West Mediterranean.

The export of Basma to European countries became possible following the three year long monitoring of its quality by British American Tobacco's (BAT) specialists.

“Following the monitoring it was reported that Uzbek tobacco meets the international quality standards of BAT and even wins by the price-performance ratio,” the statement said.

Furthermore, the increase of tobacco export up to 650-700 tons a year will provide some 120 farmers and 1,500-1,700 tobacco growers of the district with consistent work.
