The Iranian government has started the construction of a new 451-megawatt thermal power plant not far from the Sahand Thermal Power Plant located in Bonab County of Iran’s East Azerbaijan Province, said Iranian Deputy Energy Minister Homayoun Haeri, Trend reports referring to IRNA.

According to him, the plant’s gas-powered turbine section will produce 307 megawatts of electricity, while its steam-powered section will produce 144 megawatts of electricity.

Haeri added that the station, which will also carry the name of Sahand Thermal Power Plant, will be commissioned by the summer of 2022.

"The construction of this power plant will cost 250 million euros. The primary fuel used by the plant will be gas, and diesel will be its backup fuel,” he said.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani participated in the groundbreaking of the new Sahand Thermal Power Plant via video conferencing.
