Azerbaijan leads in direct foreign investments in Georgia

Azerbaijan leads in the volume of direct foreign investments in Georgia with $246 million (19.5 percent) in 2018, Trend reports citing the Georgian National Statistics Office (Geostat).

The second place is held by the Netherlands with $208 million (16.5 percent), the UK is third with $179 million (14.1 percent).

In 2018, the volume of foreign direct investment in Georgia decreased by 35.5 percent compared to 2017. In general, last year foreigners invested $1.26 billion in Georgia.

The National Statistics Service of Georgia calls the main reason for reducing the flow of investments - the completion of the gas pipeline. The agency explains that several companies created for foreign investment were transferred to the ownership of residents of Georgia.

In 2018, the share of reinvestment in Georgia amounted to 34.6 percent of total foreign direct investment.

In addition, the largest amount of foreign direct investment was made in the financial sector - $271 million, although investment in this sector fell by $37 million compared to 2017. In the second place is the construction sector - $173 million, in the third - transport and communications - $163 million.
