Turkmenistan is getting ready for a cotton-picking campaign, Trend reports referring to the local Altyn Asyr television channel.

Turkmenistan’s Deputy Prime Minister Esenmyrat Orazgeldiyew presented a report on the results of working trips to the regions of the country during a work meeting.

Lately, cotton cultivation has been carried out in an integrated manner in accordance with agricultural standards. Proper work has been done in order to achieve the planned indicators in the regions. Reception centers and ginneries, combines, a fleet of trucks and tractors with trailers are fully ready for operation, the report reads.

Cotton picking in the country traditionally begins in late August or early September. Some 550,000 hectares have been allocated for cotton this year, and it is planned to harvest 1,050,000 tons of raw cotton. Cotton production in Turkmenistan is planned to be raised to 1.25 million tons next year.

Cotton was previously considered a significant export item of Turkmenistan, currently regarded as a highly demanded raw material for the country’s rapidly developing textile industry. Until recently, up to 70 percent of the cultivated raw materials were processed domestically.

The Turkmen textile industry is represented by a wide range of exports, from cotton fiber and yarn to finished garments and knitwear, produced by the largest complexes in Central Asia, which are located in the capital and in all regions of the country.
