No more coal: Kazakhstan to introduce green energy in its railway network

Subsidiary of Kazakhstan Temir Zholy, Passenger Traffic is to become the most ‘green’ company, CEO of Passenger Traffic Michael Kortum said, Trend reports with reference to the press office of Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (Kazakhstan Railways).

Kortum made the statement during briefing on the results of the first month of work as the head of the company and his plans for the further development of the railway passenger transportation.

According to him, company is currently working on upgrading its fleet. He added that 23 new trains of Russian manufacturing are to be brought to Kazakhstan before the end of the month.

“I think that modern trains should not use coal, they should be environmentally friendly, equipped with disc brakes. We are actively working on this,” he said.

During the briefing, Kortum also said that in order to improve service quality, procurement and maintenance of trains should be activated, tickets sale system should be improved, IT-technologies should be introduced on manufacturing, as well as corporate culture should be strengthened.

“We have developed a strategy of ‘quick victories’ and more long-term plans. Long-term plans include goal to update the fleet, repair wagons, improve work of the information system,” he said.

Implementation of these goals will allow to increase efficiency of railway passenger transport, improve quality of service in the trains, he concluded.
