By Tamilla Mammadova – Trend:

Georgian broccoli and carrots can replace imports in local market, if their production increases and quality improves, Trend reports referring to the study of Georgian Policy and Management Consulting Group (PMCG).

According to the study's findings, the production of broccoli and cauliflower in Georgia is rather low, although Georgian broccoli is still exported to neighboring countries, albeit in small quantities.

“Broccoli has more potential for import substitution than for export. Therefore, manufacturers are advised to focus on supplies to the Georgian market,” the research said.

As for berries, raspberry production in Georgia is developing, and average producer prices are competitive.

“This gives Georgia the advantage of being attractive to the European market and competing with other importers in the EU. Therefore, this culture can successfully satisfy local demand, replace imports and be exported to the EU,” the research said.

According to the report, Kakheti is a leader in the production of blackberries among the country's regions. However, there is no processing plant in the region and, therefore, there are no perspectives for the export of blackberries from Georgia to the EU. Therefore, at this stage, it is better to focus on import substitution.
