By Tamilla Mammadova – Trend:

The majority of infrastructure projects in the country has been completed after relaunching the government rural program of Georgia in 2019, Trend reports citing Georgian media outlets.

Out of 4,808 infrastructure projects selected by citizens in the government’s rural support program for this year, 3,212 have already been completed, while the rest of the infrastructure projects are underway and shall be completed by the end of the year.

Most of the project realized by the rural communities upon their decision include renovation of drinking water and drainage systems, construction of education and sports facilities, and construction and repair of roads and bridges.

The funds allocated for each small infrastructure project vary between 5,000 lari ($1,685) and 10,000 lari ($3,371). The amount given to municipalities depends on the size of the population in the area and ranges between 10,000 lari ($3,371) and 20,000 lari ($6,742).

The program first started in 2009, then was stopped in 2016, and was relaunched on January 1, 2019 “in a renewed format.”

The rural support program implemented in 2009 allowed 3,700 rural communities across Georgia to decide with the government what projects were most important for their particular area.

Selected projects may be co-financed by international or donor organizations, by municipalities or other funds allowed by law.
