Norway expressed readiness to allocate funds to finance the activities of the UN Multi-Partner Human Security Trust Fund for the Aral Sea Region in Uzbekistan, Trend reports citing the press service of Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Investment and Foreign Trade.

Delegation of Norway led by the State Secretary of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Audun Halvorsen discussed this topic at a meeting at the Ministry of Investments and Foreign Trade.

During the meeting, the prospects for investment and trade and economic cooperation between the two countries were discussed, taking into account the existing untapped potential.

In this context, the parties considered specific interaction schemes for further expanding partnership in the production of building materials, pharmaceuticals, light industry, energy and the IT sector, as well as arranging supplies of Uzbek fruits and vegetables and textiles to Norway.

The Norwegian side welcomed the efforts of Uzbekistan’s Government to enter the world trading system by intensifying the process of the country's accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO).

The prospects for the participation of Norwegian business circles in the work of the Tashkent International Investment Forum in 2020 were discussed.

Following the meeting, it was also agreed to send Norwegian experts to Uzbekistan in the spring of next year to develop specific proposals for the implementation of promising projects in various fields, in particular in the field of healthcare.

Norway was the first external donor to the UN Trust Fund for the Aral Sea region. The country has invested about $1.1 million.

The fund was officially launched at the UN headquarters in New York on November 27, 2018. It must mobilize financial and technical resources for projects aimed at eliminating the consequences of the ecological catastrophe in the Aral Sea region. The fund will work until the end of 2023.
