MFA: Sweden, Azerbaijan have potential for further dev’t of economic relations

Baku, Azerbaijan, Nov.14

By Leman Zeynalova – Trend:

Sweden and Azerbaijan have good bilateral economic relations with potential for further development, Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs told Trend.

The ministry said Sweden exported goods to Azerbaijan for about 20.8 million euros and imported goods from Azerbaijan for about 0.7 million euros in 2018.

“Telecommunication and engineering goods make up the largest share of the Swedish exports to Azerbaijan and the Swedish imports from Azerbaijan consist mainly of textile products and engineering goods,” said the MFA.

As for the significance of the major transport and energy projects, implemented by Azerbaijan, especially, the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway and Southern Gas Corridor, the ministry said interlinking countries and regions is positive for people to people contacts and trade.

The BTK railway has been built on the basis of the Azerbaijani-Georgian-Turkish intergovernmental agreement. At the initial stage, the volume of freight traffic will be at the level of 6.5 million tons of cargo, and up to one million passengers will be transported through this railway.

The Southern Gas Corridor is one of the priority projects for the EU and envisages the transportation of 10 billion cubic meters of Azerbaijani gas from the Caspian region through Georgia and Turkey to Europe.

Further, the Swedish ministry recalled that foreign minister of Azerbaijan visited Sweden recently in connection to the celebration of the 10 year anniversary of the Eastern Partnership.

“There are currently no planned Swedish business delegation visits to Azerbaijan,” said the MFA.
