BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 6

By Tamilla Mammadova - Trend:

The Georgian hydroponic greenhouse complex Georgian Greenhouse Corporation continues to produce vegetables in the same volumes, said Nutsa Kistauri, head of the public relations service at the Georgian Co-Investment Fund, Trend reports with reference to EastFruit analytical portal.

The high-tech complex located in the Gardabani region (Eastern Georgia), has been operating since 2015. The total area of hydroponic greenhouses is 12 hectares. The complex is a project of the Georgian Co-Investment Fund. Currently, various varieties of cucumber, tomato, sweet and hot pepper are grown in the complex's greenhouses.

According to Kistauri, disinfection work was additionally carried out in the complex in connection with the threat of coronavirus.

“In order not to fail the next season, which begins in September, the company has already begun to make stocks of vegetables. This is done in order not to depend on the factors related to the closure of borders,” she said.

The Georgian Agro House company established as part of another Georgian Co-Investment Fund project also continues to work, although its supply structure has changed significantly in the recent period, Kistauri said.

The Georgian Agro House company delivers vegetables and greens to the local and export markets under the Planta brand. It owns a modern enterprise for the storage and packaging of fresh vegetables and provides distribution service.

“At the end of 2019, 17 percent of Georgian Agro House sales accounted for export markets. The remaining products were sold on the local market; 45 percent were delivered to supermarket chains, and 55 percent - to agricultural markets,” Kistauri notes.

Despite the fact that vegetables under the Planta brand are much more expensive than the products of many local and foreign producers, they are in great demand in Georgia. The cost of cucumbers in Planta packages for bulk purchases is currently 6 lari ($1.9) per one kilogram, and tomatoes - 7 lari ($2.2) per kilo.
