By Tamilla Mammadova – Trend:

Georgian Agara Sugar Company will resume its activities, Trend reports citing Georgian media.

As reported, the renewal of sugar production in Agara is planned for the summer 2020.

"Agara Sugar Company will resume local production in June," said Alkhan Alizadeh, director of Agara Sugar Company.

According to him, the necessary preparatory works for the production will be started in stages and the plant will be put into operation on June 1.

"The situation in the country is such that it is important to start local production. Our factory will resume sugar production for that purpose. The factory employed over 500 persons until the plant stopped the production, but they will return to their working places. Now we are slowly starting the preparatory works,” said Alizadeh.

As he noted, the plant was shut down for a while, so the repair work will be carried out, which will employ about 200 people.

"At the same time, all safety measures recommended by healthcare organizations will be observed,” said the director.

Agara Sugar stopped its production in November 2016. The reason for the closure of the plant was competition with imported Ukrainian products and the high price of sugar on international exchanges.

In June 2017, the company resumed production, but the next year it stopped work for a similar reason.
