Sown area of annual crops decreases in Georgia

BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 16

Sown areas of annual crops amounted to 206,600 hectares in 2019 in Georgia, which is 0.2 percent less than in the same period of the previous year, Trend reports with reference to National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat).

As reported, sown areas of winter crops were 55,400 hectares and sown areas of spring crops – 151,200 hectares.

Sown area of maize took the biggest share in the sown areas of annual crops and equaled 74,900 hectares. Sown area of wheat was 45,100 hectares, of barley – 27,200 hectares.

Meanwhile, sown area of potato reached 17,900 hectares, of fodder crops –15,000 hectares, of vegetables – 12,700 hectares, and of the remaining crops - 13,900 hectares.

According to Geostat, export of vegetables from Georgia in 2019 amounted to $11.55 million in monetary terms. The share of vegetables in Georgia’s total exports made up 0.3 percent.

The major part of exports accounted for tomatoes - $2.29 million, mushrooms - $1.12 million, cucumbers - $1.11 million, and potatoes - $0.98 million.

In 2019, the volume of exports of vegetables from Georgia decreased by 27.7 percent compared to 2018.
