Frozen meat sales plummet in Georgia

BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 21

By Tamilla Mammadova - Trend:

Sales of frozen meat in Georgia declined sharply, Trend reports citing Georgian media.

The importers suspended the import of goods, because they can not sell it, said the report.

The closure of hotels, cafes and restaurants, that are the main segment of frozen meat consumption, caused a sharp drop in sales.

As reported, the population of Georgia consumes 55,000 tons of meat per year. More than half of the products are imported.

Georgia imported chicken meat worth $64.35 million in 2019. During the reporting period, the country imported pork worth $30.49 million and beef worth $13.90 million. Furthermore, Georgia imported fish worth $33.01 million last year.

Meat production in the country was 9.5 percent less in the 4th quarter of 2019 than in the same period of 2018 amounting to 20,900 tons. The annual production of meat decreased by 6.9 percent to 67,600 tons.
