Iran reveals amount of wheat to be purchased from farmers

BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 25

It is forecasted that 10.5 million tons of wheat will be purchased from farmers in Iran in the current Iranian year (starting March 20, 2020), said Adviser to Iran’s Agriculture Minister Esmaeil Esfandiaripour, Trend reports citing the ministry.

According to Esfandiaripour, a total of 14 million tons of wheat is planned to be harvested in Iran this year.

Esfandiaripour added that 1 kg of wheat is purchased from farmers for 25,000 rials (about 59 cent). This amount increased by 47 percent compared to last Iranian year (from March 21, 2019 to March 20,2020).

The official said that in terms of quality and quantity, Khuzestan province in western Iran, ranks first in cultivation of wheat in Iran. Wheat has been planted on 542,000 hectares in the province.

"Along with Khuzestan, wheat harvest has begun in Sistan and Baluchestan, Hormozgan, Bushehr and southern part of Kerman province," he said.

The price of ordinary wheat to be purchased from farmers in the current planting year is set between 25,000 rials (about 59 cents) and 26,000 rials (about 61 cents) per kilogram of durum wheat in Iran in the current Iranian year. A number of products, including wheat, tea, rice and other products, are purchased from farmers by the state company under a guarantee in Iran.

As much as 142,000 tons of wheat worth 3.56 trillion rials (about $ 84.9 million) were purchased from farmers in Iran from April 4 to April 22.
