Kazakhstan eyeing certain steps to increase aluminum output

BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 6

By Nargiz Sadikhova - Trend:

Kazakhstan is planning on taking certain measures to develop the aluminum production in the country, Trend reports with reference to the press office of Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Industry and Infrastructural Development.

The ministry said that in order to determine promising production spheres in Kazakhstan, the import of aluminum, copper and steel products has been analyzed. The production volume in the majority of country’s industry spheres was observed in 2019.

The extraction and production volume in mining and metallurgy are increasing yearly, as the production volume increased by 4.1 percent in 2019 having amounted to 4.8 trillion tenge ($11.3 billion). Metal ores extraction increased by 3.7 percent.

The ministry reminded that a plan for further industrial development was presented in Dec. 2020 during a meeting of the governmental project office chaired by Kazakhstan’s Prime Minister Askar Mamin.

The plan oversees a number of steps for further development of aluminum production in the country:

- increase in alumina processing to 1 million tons to produce primary aluminum of 500,000 tons as a result of Kazakhstan Electrolysis Plant JSC project implantation (increase will amount to 250,000 tons);

- increase of manufactured goods output by 100,000 tons through the implementation of manufactured goods production projects: foil (15,000 tons), cans (15,000 tons), wire (16,000 tons), sheet metal (15,000 tons), radiators (12,000 tons), profiles (13,000 tons), powders (4,000 tons).

Similar actions for production of high value-added products are provided for in the copper, steel and titanium industries of Kazakhstan, the ministry said.

Within the framework of the third five-year plan of the Industrial and Innovative Development State Program, the goal is to expand export potential as a result of production increase.

The ministry noted that current extraction volume in Kazakhstan is 3.8 million tons for aluminum ores, which is processed into alumina (1.4 million tons), of which nearly 850,000 tons are exported and 550,000 tons are processed into metal in Kazakhstan.
