Uzbekistan aims to increase export of local watermelons to CIS

Chirakchinsky district of the Kashkadarya region of Uzbekistan plans to increase the export of local watermelons, Trend reports citing Uzbek media.

"The first batch of production have already been delivered to large shopping malls of the country. This year, 385 farms and 591 owners of homesteads are engaged in growing watermelon on 14,000 hectares in the Chirakchinsky district. Early varieties of berries are sown on 5,000 hectares of land," the report says.

Teal watermelons will be delivered to Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Belarus and Ukraine. In 2019, the volume of exports of local watermelon amounted to 25,000 tons, and this year this figure will grow to 100,000 tons.

In addition, a large greenhouse for growing melon crops in Uchkuduk district of Navoi region in Uzbekistan is under construction on the area of two hectares, with a total cost of $500,000.

According to the state statistics Committee, the volume of production in agriculture increased in the first quarter of 2020 compared to the first quarter of 2019 by 3.9 percent to 23.6 trillion soum ($2.3 billion), including in crop production – by 6.4 percent to 1.7 trillion soum ($166.6 million).

The vegetable harvest increased in physical terms by 11.3 percent compared to the first quarter of 2019, to 62,600 tons.
