Azerbaijan to increase cotton production

BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 20

By Fidan Babayeva – Trend:

Azerbaijani cotton has been mainly exported to Turkey since the beginning of 2020, Director of the agrarian production and trade department of the Azerbaijan Industrial Corporation OJSC Ilham Bayramov told Trend.

There are certain offers from buyers in Russia, and it is also planned to export cotton to this country in the future, he noted.

The director said that 10,354 tons of cotton fiber were exported to Turkey so far, adding that the revenues from cotton export to Turkey exceeded $13.9 million in 2019.

“Sowing seedlings was delayed in 2020 and began on April 15. The main reason for this was the low temperature of the soil due to cold and rainy weather. It is planned to complete sowing by May 25 on 28,035 hectares out of 29,000 hectares of land, that is, 96.7 percent planned for sowing cotton,” he said.

In 2020, 650 hectares were sown using new technologies and methods, in particular, double row and drip sowing methods, Bayramov noted.

“To increase productivity, the timely use of fertilizers is of exceptional importance. Therefore, nitrogen and urea fertilizers, including ammophos and ammonium nitrate, are placed into the soil in the required volume,” he emphasized.

In 2019, the yield was envisaged at the level of 28 centners per hectare, and this year the yield of 30 centners per hectare is forecasted.
