By Tamilla Mammadova – Trend:

Georgia has replenished its reserves of 8,000 tons of wheat, Trend reports via Georgian media.

As reported, two ships with 5,000 and 3,000 tons were unloaded at the Poti grain terminal.

The supplies were replenished as part of the Food and Development Program of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

Meanwhile, 27,000 tons of American wheat will be imported to Georgia from the United States in the near future.

According to the Georgian Wheat and Flour Producers Association, local wheat harvest will start in Georgia in June.

"Today there is a sufficient supply of wheat and flour and a stable price in Georgia, and in parallel with the consumption of products, the supply is carried out smoothly," explained the association.

Meanwhile, in 2019, around 27,000 tons of wheat were delivered to the Georgian port of Poti.

The Food and Development Program of the USAID began three years ago with an agreement between the US and Georgia.

A five-year program with a budget of over $14 million is being implemented by Land O'Lakes, one of US’ leading agribusiness and food companies, in partnership with the Government of Georgia, the University of Michigan, and the Georgian Farmers Association (GFA).The aim of the program is to support the development of agriculture in Georgia and promote the well-being of the population.
