Uzbekistan starts to expand saffron cultivation

BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 27

By Ilkin Seyfaddini - Trend:

Uzbekistan’s BMB Trade Group has signed an investment agreement with Italian Opera SRL company for 25 million euros on cultivation and processing of saffron in Bakhmal district of Jizzakh region, Trend reports with reference to Uzbekistan National News Agency.

Administration of Bakhmal district allocated 400 hectares for the project. First harvest is scheduled for the period from October through November 2020. Qualified agronomists and technologists from other countries will be invited to conduct the upcoming work effectively, the report said.

Saffron is cultivated in Iran, India, Greece, Italy, Spain, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan.

The cost of saffron in the international market ranges from 8,000 to 30,000 euros per kilogram: the higher the quality of the final product, the higher the selling price.

On 1 May 2020, after adoption of presidential decree on measures to protect, cultivate, process wild medicinal plants and the rational use of available resources, Uzbekistan began to create clusters for growing, storage and primary production or deep processing of medicinal plants.
