Embassy: Romania, Georgia enjoy excellent relations

BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 5

By Tamilla Mammadova - Trend:

Romania and Georgia enjoy excellent, friendly and warm relations, with frequent and substantial dialogue at different levels, as well as strong practical cooperation, focused on supporting Georgia’s European and Euro-Atlantic aspirations, Embassy of Romania to Georgia told Trend.

"In 2019-2020, Romania and Georgia evoke their three centuries of long relationship, a symbolic anniversary reminding the historic ties between the two peoples and their rulers, dating back to the Middle Ages. In this sense, it is worth mentioning that the first printing house in Tbilisi was founded with the precious help of Romanian ruler Constantin Brancoveanu, in 1709," the embassy said.

The Embassy of Romania to Georgia noted that Romania was one of the first countries which recognized Georgia’s independence in 1991, and since then, bilateral relations have developed steadily in all spheres of activity, from political dialogue, characterized by a sustained dynamic of bilateral visits, to economic cooperation, including collaboration in the fields of transport and energy, cultural relations, people-to-people contacts and so on.

"Romania was the first European Union Member State which ratified, on July 3, 2014, the Association Agreement between the European Union and Georgia, together with its components regarding the creation of the Free Trade Area, opening up numerous opportunities for Georgia in the economic field. Furthermore, Romania supported firmly, at the EU level, a favorable decision on the liberalization of the visa regime for Georgian citizens traveling to the European Union. All these were important landmarks on Georgia’s path to Europe, and we are proud of having supported such fundamental developments," the embassy noted,

According to the embassy, Romania will continue to firmly support the European and Euro-Atlantic aspirations of Georgia.

"Within this general framework we evaluate the level of economic relations between Romania and Georgia as very good. According to the National Statistics Office of Georgia, Romania is, among the European Union member states, one of the main trading partners of Georgia. Of course, there is still a lot of untapped potential, which we are striving to make full use of, together with our Georgian partners," the embassy noted,

The embassy added that in 2019, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Romania and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Georgia signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at expanding the economic and commercial relations, by creating a platform of cooperation between the business communities of the two countries.
