Iran to boost agricultural production

Iran will produce 128 million tons of agricultural products in the current Iranian year (began March 20, 2020), Minister of Agriculture Jihad Kazem Khavazi told IRIB, Trend reports.

Iran's agricultural production was 97 million tons in 2013 (when current Iranian government came to power), Khavazi said.

Khavazi added that the production was 68 million tons in the area of cultivation in 2013, and it increased to 83.7 million tons in the last Iranian year (from March 21, 2019 to March 20, 2020). This figure will grow to 86.5 million tons in the current year.

The minister said that the production in horticultural area was 16 million tons in 2013. This figure reached 23 million tons last year and will be increased to 24.8 million tons this year.

"The production was 12 million tons in the area of livestock and poultry in 2013. Last year, this figure increased to 15.6 million tons, and this year it will be 16 million tons," he said.

Khavazi said that in 2013, the production of fish and fishery products was 885,000 tons. This figure reached 1.2 million tons last year and will be increased to 1.3 million tons in the current year.

According to the minister, Iran annually imports 9-9.5 million tons of corn seeds, 4.4 million tons of compressed soybeans and 3 million tons of barley.

"About 2 million tons of wheat will be imported this year to ensure Iran's strategic reserves," he said.
