Iran ready to secure Iraq's gas, electricity needs

TEHRAN, Iran, July 22

Trend:

Iran has the capacity to export gas and electricity to Iraq, and feed its industries, spokesman for Iranian Oil, Gas and Petrochemical Products Exporters' Union Hamid Hosseini told Trend.

"Iraq has signed a two year deal for energy trade with Iran that means Iraqis don't have to worry about the US extending waivers," he said.

"Iraq generates 14,000 megawatt electricity and it needs to import 30,000 megawatt more for its needs, and Iran produces 56,000 megawatt electricity," Hosseini said.

The spokesman said that Iraq imports some 4,000 megawatt from Iran, which includes some 1,000 megawatts of direct import, while 3,000 megawatt is generated through gas export to Iraq's power plant.

Hosseini also said that Iran is working to set up a 1,500 megawatt power plant in Iraq.

"Iraq can't ignore this, if it wants to purchase electricity from another country," he said.

Hosseini has previously said that Iran hopes to solve its gas and power export payment problem by possibly bartering with Iraq for its oil and oil products.

"It is expected that the issue of Iraq's payment for Iran's power and gas export will be resolved during Iraqi prime minister's visit to Iran, or there may be a barter contract for trading gas and electricity with oil and oil products," Hosseini had said.
