Iran reveals volume of tea leaves purchased from farmers

BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 12

More than 81,000 tons of tea leaves have been purchased from farmers in Gilan and Mazandaran provinces in the current Iranian year (began March 20, 2020), Chairman of Iran Tea Organization Habib Jahansaz said, Trend reports citing the organization.

According to Jahansaz, 66 percent of purchased tea leaves were of 1st grade and 34 percent - of 2nd grade.

Jahansaz added that the value of purchased tea leaves is 3.4 trillion (about $80.9 million) rials.

The chairman noted that 3.07 trillion rials [about $73 million] has been paid to the farmers, so far. This is 91.1 percent of the total value.

"More than 18,400 tons of dry tea was produced from tea leaves purchased from farmers," he said.

It is forecasted that 130,000-135,000 tons of tea leaves will be purchased from farmers in the current Iranian year.

The price of first-grade tea leaves is 46,000 rials (about $1.09), and the cost of second-grade tea leaves is 33,000 rials (about 78 cents) this year.

In Iran, some products such as rice, sugar beet, wheat and tea are purchased from farmers by a state-owned company under a guarantee and paid for in installments.
