Iran, Afghanistan discuss long-term goals for the Khaf-Herat railway

Iran's Minister of Roads and Urban Development, Mohammad Eslami, and General Director of Afghanistan Railway Authority and Acting Minister of Transport, Yamma Shams, discussed the details and different dimensions of the opening and operation of the Khaf-Herat railway line on Wednesday, October 8.

The two sides discussed the operation, financial issues, insurance services, manpower training, freight, and passenger transportation, customs, technical and security issues, via video conference, Trend reports citing the official website of the Ministry of Road and Urban Development.

Mohammad Eslami emphasized the need to pay particular attention to the details of the contract for the operation of the Khaf-Herat railway.

"Long term goals can be established for this railway. The construction and operation of this railway is just the beginning and it is the cornerstone for the development of strategic relations,” he added.

Khaf-Herat railway will be 130 km long, of which 70 km is inside Iran soil and 60 km is inside Afghanistan. With the completion of this project, Afghanistan can take advantage of a railway for the first time that provides access to Turkey and Europe with Iran ports in the Persian Gulf.
